What to expect from a manual coffee grinder: I bought this after looking at a lot of them, and there are probably two important things to know before you buy one. First, there is some manual labor involved with grinding, with more work the finer the grind (and the more the coffee). Second, because of this, most manual grinders are sized to make a few cups of coffee at most. If you enjoy taking your time making coffee, and only want a cup or two, manual grinders are appropriate. If you are trying to make a big pot for guests or rushing out the door with your coffee, manual grinders aren't going to make you happy. Now, on to this model in particular. It looks very nice, and I think the wooden box will age nicely. The handle is much longer than it appears in the picture, which makes grinding a breeze, and as mentioned in the product description there is a magnet in the drawer that keeps it securely fastened under the burrs while you're grinding. There is also a plastic cover for the hopper to keep beans from jumping out while grinding. Finally, it has rubber feet to stick securely to the counter while grinding. These are all nice touches that are mostly missing in the cheaper wooden box grinders out there. The grind setting is very adjustable, but there isn't any easy way to track where it is which would be a pain if you change it very often (switching between French press and drip, or drip and Moka pot, etc.). However, I'm not sure any manual grinders are good at this; it's much easier to keep track of settings on an electric grinder. How is the coffee grind? For pour over coffee, it does a pretty good job. Like every manual grinder I've seen, there is a little wobble to the interior burr (it's only connected to the handle, it has no structure inside to keep it vertical), but at this fineness it seems fine. I don't have an espresso machine so I can't test the finest grind settings; it does seem pretty finely ground, and actually at that granularity you won't have problems with the interior burr wobbling. French press actually works quite well; my main test is whether very much of the beans end up in my cup because they got ground too fine, and there was very little to speak of.The bottom line is that it is an attractive and functional grinder that should last a long time. It does as good a job as I'd expect any manual grinder to do, and it's very pleasant in use. It's already a part of my morning coffee routine.
